Just as his career was taking off, things have tragically ended for musician Lil Peep (real name Gustav Åhr), who has died at the age of 21.
A representative of the artist confirmed the terrible news to The Guardian earlier this morning, proving to be true the suspicions that had already been circling the internet for hours. It is being reported that the cause of death is a drug overdose, though it’s not clear at the time of publishing if that has also been confirmed.
Lil Peep got his start fairly recently, uploading his first mixtape to SoundCloud back in 2015. He began to garner some attention just a year later, and major music media outlets began paying attention and picking up on what he had to say this year. There were many critics and music journalists around the world who predicted the up-and-coming rapper would break out in a major way soon, becoming the next to emerge from the underground.
Just three months ago, Lil Peep released his highly-anticipated debut full-length album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1, and while it didn’t make an impact on the charts here in America, it was a sign that he had finally arrived. It came after he dropped several mixtapes and EPs, which were all warming up to a proper studio album.
