Nigeria Army Didn’t Declare IPOBa Terrorist Organization- COAS Buratai
Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, has stated that the army did not declare the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a terror group as widely reported.
Senate President Bukola Saraki had reacted to the declaration, saying the army had no power or right to declare the group as a terrorist group.
Speaking during the official launch of Operation Python Dance II in Abakaliki, Buratai argued that what the Defence Headquarters did was a pronouncement on IPOB and that the statement of the military gave room for the right steps to be taken on the matter.
He said FG’s action concerning IPOB was right and that the military did not over step its bound towards the protection of lives and properties in the country.
“You have to get it very clear. First of all, what the Defence Headquarters did was to make pronouncement. It wasn’t a declaration per se. But this has given room for the right step to be taken. I think the government is doing the right thing.
“It is not that we are overstepping our bounds. We are still within the limits. And I ensure you that what the military said was to set the ball rolling and to bring the awareness to the public that this is what this organization is all about. I’m happy that the government has done the right thing right now.”
IPOB Crisis: Jonathan Condemns Buhari, Slams Lai Mohammed
Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned the Muhammadu Buhari government over the show of force in the South East and South West concerning the crisis created by the agitation for the republic of Biafra by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
In a statement signed on his behalf by Reno Omokri, Jonathan said the Buhari government should note that Nigeria isn’t under a dictatorship.
Emboldened by Senate President Bukola Saraki’s statement who said the military had no right to declare IPOB as a terror group, Jonathan said:
“We want to advise the Buhari administration, which has announced plans to extend the military show of force to the South-South and the South-West through Operation Crocodile Smile, to tread with caution.
“Nigeria is no longer under military rule. In a democracy, you separate the military from the police. The military is not meant to fight criminality within a nation because they are trained to fight a nation’s external enemies.
“It is the police that are trained to fight crime internally. When the military starts doing the job of the police and starts fighting or doing what they call a ‘show of force’, the effect will not be to reduce crime. The effect will be to intimidate people.”
He also slammed Information Minister Lai Mohammed for saying the agitation for Biafra was caused by PDP’s loss of the 2015 election.
“The insinuations in the press conference given by Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday, accusing the opposition of sponsoring the IPOB and the fact that he mentioned that Nnamdi Kanu preached Nigerian unity during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan is another clear indication that the present administration has not left propaganda mode for proper agenda mode two and a half year into their tenure.
“If the government, in which Lai Mohammed serves, knows which opposition members are sponsoring IPOB, then they should identify them, arrest them and then prosecute them.”
Jonathan said Mohammed had no moral right to cast aspersions as the minister had once criticised him for declaring Boko Haram a terrorist group.
He added, “It is our suspicion that Lai Mohammed is talking from history seeing as he criticized the Jonathan government for banning Boko Haram in a statement he released on June 10, 2013, even though the Jonathan government had gone through due process before proscribing that murderous sect. Perhaps Lai Mohammed thinks everybody is like him and those he represents.”
He then told him to focus on his job instead of propaganda.
HoR Chief Whip Blasts Saraki For Saying IPOB Isn’t a Terrorist Organization
The Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, has condemned Senate President Bukola Saraki for saying IPOB isn’t a terrorist organization.
According to him, Saraki’s declaration was “a mere political statement” that portrayed the nation’s Number Three citizen as “a controversial leader.”
“I am sure the Senate President was only expressing his personal opinion, which I further believe was not a good one in the given circumstances. The Nigerian Armed forces in my opinion are doing their best professionally and in the best interest of a united Nigeria. Even the south-eastern state governors have declared the activities of Kanu’s IPOB as illegal and therefore proscribed. He (Senate President) can’t cry more than the bereaved.
“For me, the recent comment made by the Senate President on this matter was a mere political statement that would only portray him as a controversial leader. Considering the attacks meted out to innocent Nigerians by the IPOB group in the South-East and indeed the nationalistic conduct of the northern governors and the prompt action they took to stop possible reprisals in the North, the Senate President’s statement was to say the least
