The police rescued two armed robbers who robbed a shop in Calabar from being lynched by Angry mobs.

Two armed robbers were on Friday rescued by a combined team of policemen and other security agencies from being lynched by angry mob
after they had robbed a shop owner along Marian Road in Calabar.

The scene created
gridlock along the busy road as angry mob made frantic effort to mete out ‘jungle justice’
on the suspected criminals.

It was learnt that three suspected thieves had succeeded in robbing a shop around the Timber Market, off Marian Road, with a standby Toyota Camry (Lagos GGE 519 CG), but they ran out of
luck as other shop owners raised the alarm which attracted members of the public.

An eyewitness, Mr. Anthony Una, said the robbers had zoomed into the road but were
immediately intercepted along Marian Road by the driver of another vehicle who heard the
screaming of “thieves” from members of the public.

“Two of the thieves succeeded in robbing a shop around the Timber Market axis while the
last one was on the steering wheel waiting for
them. Immediately, other shop owners noticed
the robbery and raised the alarm.

“The Camry found its way to Marian Road but luck ran out of them when another vehicle
blocked them. One of the robbers who had a gun and the money that was stolen ran into the opposite bushy garden while the two others
were apprehended,” he said.

Our correspondent witnessed the scene after
the two suspected robbers were caught and
observed how the angry mob’s attempts to kill
the suspects became impossible following the
arrival of a police patrol van.
One of the thieves, who sustained multiple head
injuries, had consistently struggled with the
mob to free himself before the intervention of the police.
The other suspect, who sustained injuries in the
process, also created a scene by rushing to the police van to surrender himself.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, said she had yet to be briefed on the matter.
