Professor Dupe Ademola-Popoola, an
Ophthalmologist with the University of
Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), on
Saturday cautioned parents against hitting
children on the head.
According to the expert who spoke with
newsmen in Kwara State, beating
children on the head might result in
visual impairment, adding that it may
further result to serious eye injury.
Explaining the dangers of this act, Prof.
Popola noted that beating on the head
also increases pressure on the skull and
on the optic nerve.
The expert who stressed that vision
drives development said, “Three out of
10,000 children are blind in the
developed countries while there are 12
out of 10,000 in developing countries,
mostly in Africa and Asia.”
She, however, appealed to parents and
schools to always supervise children
during play so as to avoid injuries that
could damage their eyes while calling on
schools to screen learners to ascertain
the status of their eyes so as to help
correct any defects before five years.
